Image dimensions don't have to be confusing.

Every digital image is a grid of pixels. Its width and height in pixels — say 2400 × 3000 — tell you how much detail it holds, but not how big it is in the real world.

The aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. 2400 × 3000 simplifies to 4:5, the shape Instagram uses for portrait posts. If the ratio doesn't match the destination, the image gets cropped or letterboxed.

DPI and PPI connect pixels to physical size. Divide pixels by the dots per inch to get inches: at 300 DPI, a common print standard, 2400 × 3000 pixels prints sharply at 8 × 10 inches. Screens work similarly with PPI, which describes how densely a display packs its pixels.

Finally, every destination — a social platform, a printer, a book cover — has its own requirements for size, ratio and resolution. Ratilio's tools help you check each of these quickly.
